Windows Server 2008 End-of-Life Support is near

Windows Server 2008 end-of-life mainstream support ended back on January 13, 2015. However, there is a more critical date looming.

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will end all support for Windows Server 2008. It seems like 2020 is a way’s off but updating an IT infrastructure can be a large task.  If you are still running Windows Server 2008 the time to start planning is now.

No Patches Leaves Your Operating System Vulnerable to Security Issues

End of support refers to the date when Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. Vulnerabilities in the operating system that are discovered after this date will not be fixed by Microsoft. Furthermore, after that date Microsoft will no longer offer any type of support for the operating system. It won’t be long before those systems are specifically targeted and exploited.

What to do Before the Windows Server 2008 Extended Support Ends in 2020

The first step is to upgrade to a new operating system. You may consider an infrastructure update to take advantage of new virtualization features in modern operating systems.
An infrastructure update is no small task, so starting as soon as possible is of most importance to make sure proper planning and execution takes place.

There is a lot of planning that needs to take place before doing an infrastructure update properly. Time should be allotted for inevitable troubleshooting and delays. With such a big and complicated process at least a few small things will inevitably not go as planned and cause holdups.

If you are considering waiting until the last minute to update your 2008 Windows Servers we highly recommend leaving 6 months of leeway between your projected finish date and January 14, 2020. Your data and security are too important to put at that kind of risk.

Is it still Safe to Use my Windows Server 2008 after end of life?

“End of life” is the date after which an application is no longer supported by the company that makes it. After Windows server 2008 “end of life,” you can continue to use the Operating System, but at your own risk. New computer viruses and other malware are developed all the time and, without the security updates to fight them off, your business data and your systems are vulnerable.
